Artist Educator Mentor

As an art educator, I believe that diverse lessons are essential to helping students understand the world and develop empathy for others. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom where all learners feel valued, respected, and inspired to express themselves. I strive to foster a safe and supportive environment where every student can thrive, take creative risks, and grow both artistically and personally.
Student choice is a vital part of my teaching, as it empowers students to explore who they are and discover their unique artistic voices. I design student-centered lessons that are engaging and meaningful because they are built around students’ interests, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. By learning about themselves and diverse cultures through art, students develop the awareness and perspective needed to become compassionate global citizens, ready to face the challenges of the world with creativity and confidence.
I set high expectations for all my students, encouraging them to put forth their best effort in every project. I emphasize the importance of maintaining a growth mindset, reminding students that artistic development comes from practice, perseverance, and reflection. Above all, I believe art education should nurture curiosity, celebrate diversity, and empower students to see the beauty and possibility in both themselves and the world around them.

About Me
My name is Kiersten Smith, and I am currently an elementary art educator at the International School of Myanmar. I’m passionate about fostering creativity and building a classroom community where students feel confident expressing themselves and taking artistic risks. Beyond the art room, I’m actively involved in school life as the Dragon House Lead, Student Council co-advisor, and after-school basketball coach. I also contribute to committees such as Learning Leaders and STEAMscape, supporting collaboration and school-wide initiatives. I believe art is a universal language that connects cultures and inspires students to explore the world through creativity and curiosity.
Outside The Classroom

Outside the classroom, I love exploring the world through travel and backpacking, immersing myself in new cultures and bringing home fresh inspiration for my art projects. I’m happiest when I’m outdoors, whether hiking through nature, swimming, or spending time playing with my dog. Above all, I find true joy in creating, especially when I’m working with clay, shaping sculptures and vessels that reflect the stories and experiences I gather along the way.
